The film is a story of parallel biographies. In 1944 a family of three Jewish patricians lives in a small Hungarian town. Eva, the 13-year-old granddaughter, keeps a diary and read Dickens' David Copperfield. The hero of the book occasionally appears in the little girl's life, or Eve passes through the world of the novel. First Éva's cousin is taken away. Then Éva's mother and her friend arrive from Budapest. They confiscate her grandfather's business, arrest her father, and this is not the end of the afflictions...
