The film is screened as part of the Scream! After Dark series. ADS Service launched the series in the summer of 2026 to bring horror films to the big screen that never received a Hungarian theatrical release — many of them hard to find even on streaming. At the Apolló the series has so far shown Flush and Skinamarink; the October night continues the V/H/S strand.

The seventh instalment in the V/H/S series, and the best received of them so far. The structure is the familiar one: five short found-footage horror films held together by a sixth that stands on its own — except that this time every piece starts from a science-fiction premise, and what lies behind the tapes is extraterrestrial.

The framing story is the film’s best idea. It takes the form of a documentary in which real specialists discuss how to establish whether a UFO recording is a fake: the occult scholar Mitch Horowitz appears, along with Niko Pueringer and Sam Gorski, the two visual-effects specialists behind the YouTube channel Corridor Digital. So in a film composed entirely of staged “amateur” footage, the intervals are given over to what makes such footage believable. This is what critics singled out: earlier instalments of the series often resembled each other only in format, whereas this one coheres around a single idea.

The five stories: a police unit forces its way into a derelict house after a string of infant disappearances; two Mumbai paparazzi will do anything to get footage of a Bollywood star; three friends go skydiving for a thirtieth birthday and notice something in the sky before take-off; animal rights activists look around a woman’s dog boarding business; and a woman in the Mojave Desert sets out to find the light she saw come down.

Among the directors is Kate Siegel, whose segment was written by Mike Flanagan. Siegel originally wanted to make a musical; when that was rejected she proposed a Muppet piece and wanted to bring in Brian Henson — that was turned down too, and she eventually arrived at the final idea with Flanagan. The dog-boarding story was written and directed by Justin Long and his brother Christian, and Justin Long appears briefly in it. The remaining pieces were directed by Jordan Downey, Virat Pal and Justin Martinez, with Jay Cheel handling the frame.

The film premiered at Fantastic Fest in September 2024 and then appeared on Shudder. On Rotten Tomatoes all but ten of sixty-two reviews are positive, the series’ best result; the critic for /Film gave it nine out of ten. For the Mojave Desert and dog-boarding segments it is worth being prepared: the film does not hold back.

The film is screened as part of the Scream!
