The “Apollo Projectograph” opened in 1912 and began its career as the first permanent cinema in Pécs, the first talkie cinema in the country. After a short hiatus at the turn of the millennium, it has been significantly modified in 2004, in its current function, as the only artist cinema in the region. Since 2014 we have been taking care of it as a free, independent, local non-profit foundation. During this time, it has grown into one of the city’s popular alternative cultural hotspots.

In addition to cultural transmission, cinema as an opinion leader must also take responsibility for bringing the economic, ecological and social problems of our time into public discourse. Its job, in addition to entertainment, is to show alternatives, new perspectives, to help critical thinking, and to contribute to the questioning of the current social order and to help imagine possible, more beautiful worlds by means of cinematography.

We try to give space to real dialogue with our events and meetings. Discourse is not just an exchange of information: it strengthens solidarity, helps to understand the causes of social phenomena, inequalities, injustices, it explores the relational systems of oppression, has a community-building power - be it oppression of minorities or women, or exploitation of nature. These topics have been given special attention for decades in our programming.

Our curation is always the result of independent editorial selection, no one interferes in our decisions. According to European arthouse traditions, our films come from international festivals, outstanding works of prominent directors and defining works of Hungarian filmmakers. Our offer is completed with current documentaries, works of art education and pieces from the most remote countries of the film world.

Apollo is a member of the Europa Cinemas Network and the Art Cinema Association of Hungary.
