Green Day: Nimrods

Tommy and his two friends are the entire lineup of the Analog Dogs, a garage band out of Kansas City. Then the phone rings: on the strength of one of their demos, they're being asked to fill in as Green Day's opening act at a New Year's Eve show in Los Angeles. Tommy doesn't have a driver's licence, and his mother (Jenna Fischer) won't hand over her car — but his older brother Wayne's is there for the taking. The drive from Kansas City to Los Angeles goes more or less nothing like they planned.

The film is built out of Green Day's own origin story: the years the band spent in a van between clubs before Dookie broke them in 1994. Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool are among the producers and appear on screen as themselves — but the story isn't about them. It's about the stretch of time when a band is still only a promise and the road isn't nostalgia yet.

Lee Kirk is a writer-director who has several episodes of The Office to his name and two previous features: The Giant Mechanical Man (2012), which premiered at Tribeca, and Ordinary World (2016), which starred Billie Joe Armstrong — the origin of this collaboration. Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman and Ryan Foust play the three leads, with Mckenna Grace, Angela Kinsey, Fred Armisen, Bobby Lee and Sean Gunn in support.

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025 under its original title, New Year's Rev; the current title — a nod to Green Day's 1997 album Nimrod — came with the distribution deal in spring 2026. SFGate praised the "spot-on" performances of the three leads and wrote about the film as a revival of the teen comedy.
